TŪMATA KŌKIRI
The Hawaiki TŪ
Academy of Māori Performing Arts
Tūmata Kōkiri | The Hawaiki TŪ Academy of Māori Performing Arts is dedicated to empowering rangatahi through Haka Theatre, cultivating leadership and creativity. Our program focuses on developing strong Māori leaders who are grounded in tradition while ready to shape the future
Developing the Next Generation of Haka Theatre Artists
Tūmata Kōkiri is a pathway for rangatahi and emerging Māori artists to train, create, and lead within the evolving world of haka theatre. Grounded in kapa haka and Māori performing arts, the Academy brings together Haka, movement and contemporary storytelling to develop confident, future-focused Māori artists.
Delivered by Hawaiki TŪ, the programme builds on the momentum of AUTAIA and works in partnership with kura/schools, industry practitioners, and key organisations, including Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, Te Puna Creative Hub, and the Tindall Foundation to support high-level creative development.
Through wānanga, rehearsals, and performance opportunities, tauira gain real-world experience while strengthening their identity and voice as Māori artists.
The impact is both immediate and long-term, nurturing the next generation of leaders in Māori performing arts, while creating clear pathways from education into professional practice.
